My Fostercare Experience

There’s no one single emotion I can associate with my home. Feelings ranging from excited, to chaotic, to anxious, to sad… the list never ends. But one thing unique to my home is foster siblings. Knowing awaiting me at home is a new baby I can play with is a joy not many experience.

Sanctuary Care Boys' Town Internship

In the summer of grade 10 to grade 11, I decided I wanted to delve deeper into foster care myself. Until now, it had always been my mom's passion and decision to undertake, but I vowed to make a change and get involved personally. This is when I decided to begin an internship with the organisation which my family partners with.

While I was there, I was involved in many different activities. For the first few weeks, I worked with the other carers and several children, helping to organise and supervise games and activities, getting involved in them myself and just spending time getting to know the children. Other than this, I also did a lot of behind-the-scenes work, helping organise and keep track of the storage unit, and creating files for new foster parents and foster children. Finally, I created a set a safe-touch lesson plans that could be used to teach foster children in the future. I created an A5 card with all this information and organised a tea session with existing foster parents where I gave a speech and handed out these cards. This internship was an amazing experience for me to get involved in the foster care space in Singapore myself!

After being involved in their processes for over 2 months, I noticed that the system they used to make placements for foster children was all done manually. Though this had been effective for them as a smaller company, I recognised that automating this system may be highly beneficial in increasing the efficiency and success of every placement. I created the back-end design and description, with all details that required consideration, and gave this to the company to use in the future.

Letter of

Recommendation

I’ll continue to advocate for this system until it leaves an even bigger mark on the world.
